Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival

By Don Dickmann

On Friday, June 8, I drove my 993 Carrera Cabriolet to Frankenmuth for their Bavarian Festival. Our club had been invited by the Michigan Vintage VW club to attend and be part of a show of vintage German cars. We were located on Main Street right in the heart of the action.

Frankenmuth is our ersatz German town and it showed—alpine buildings, men walking around in lederhosen, women in peasant costumes, oompah polka bands, and plenty of beer. Otto and Marcia Stockmeyer from our club also were there in their red 996 cabriolet. Only one other Porsche showed up, a 944 barn find that had been nicely restored.

Most of the VW beetles were modified and there was one highly rusted VW bus with a Subaru engine. A sign on one of the windows said, “Don’t ask if I’m going to paint it because I’m not!”

The reward for attending was a free chicken dinner at Zehnder’s famous restaurant—WAY more than I could eat. The weather was perfect, so a good time was had by all.
